Veerappan (None Like Him Ever Existed) is a 2016 Indian biographical film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma, based on the life of Indian bandit Veerappan, and the events leading to Operation Cocoon to capture and kill Veerappan.[1][2][3][4] The theatrical trailer of the film, was released on 18 April 2016 to positive reviews.[5][1][2][3] The film stars Sandeep Bharadwaj, Sachiin J Joshi, Usha Jadhav, and Lisa Ray in pivotal roles.[4][6]
The film is heavily based on Ram Gopal Varma's Kannada docudrama super-hit Killing Veerappan, and hence the Hindi version too has raised hopes of a good show at the box office.[6] In an Interview with "Indian Express" Varma stated that “Making Veerappan is not about glorifying a criminal, but it is to put a mirror to how he was allowed to happen in the first place”.[7] The CBFC has cleared the film with a single cut, and the film was released on May 27, 2016.[8] Upon its release, Veerappan received positive reviews with critics praising narration, production design, direction and performances of Sandeep Bharadwaj, and Usha Jadav. [9] "Deccan Chronicle" wrote "RGV has found his long lost Mojo". The "Times of India" gave the film 3.5/5 for its visual appeal, and 3/5 for direction.[10][11][12][13]
Taran Adarsh wrote "Veerappan gives an insight into the life and times of the dreaded bandit. RGV is in good form. Sandeep Bhardwaj as Veerappan is superb". Faridoon Shahryar of "Bollywood Hungama" stated "Ram Gopal Varma is back to the grind with a gripping narrative and he keeps you interested throughout". "Veerappan marks a stellar come back! Characters that don't say anything say so much". "Satya sort of insignificant but significant people and even elephants are the hallmark of Veerappan". Sachin K. Jha of Bollywood news stated "Veerappan is just the beast to grab at your nearest theatre".[14]Several other critics and public cited positive reviews for the film.[15][16][17][18][19]
